The coolest winter skiing trips in Norway
Hans Kristian Krogh-Hanssen is a globetrotting travel and outdoor life photographer. But he also loves Norwegian nature both with and without skis. Either way, he looks for things that give him a kick.
“I’m not made to sit indoors. The nature in Norway offers adventure, excitement and challenges. Fortunately, I’m able to combine work with pleasure,” says Krogh Hanssen.
Even though he loves traveling the world, he says that if you’re looking for great skiing, look no further than Norway.
“Here you’ll find challenges whatever your level.”
“But always think safety first and check Varsom.no, a website that provides weather updates and avalanche warnings etc., before setting off. Read about safe skiing in the mountains and take an avalanche transceiver for your camera equipment. Check with local experts about trails and conditions before you
Here's his 3 tips on this winters best skiing:
Fantastic powder snow days around the ski resort when a north westerly wind blows and dumps loads of snow on the coastal mountains in Sunnmørsalpene. The conditions can change quickly, but you can enjoy many runs as they have a gondola. Plus, it’s one of the few ski centers in Norway with fjord views.
Deep in a hidden valley by one of the longest arms of the Jostedal Glacier, is a village with the coolest powder snow conditions in Norway. The micro climate around the large Jostedal Glacier, the largest in mainland Europe, makes it a few degrees colder than other parts of the very rainy Vestlandet. All the right conditions are in place for snow rather than rain. However, there are no ski lifts and you need plenty of experience and local knowledge to venture out in this tough ski terrain.
Magnificent mountains, magical views, fishing communities and cod hanging out to dry - nothing can beat the atmosphere in Lofoten. And not much can match the views here on a good day of skiing. The mountains aren’t as high as for example in Lyngen, so you can reach several peaks in one day. You can enjoy fabulous trips pretty much from March to early May. Use randonee equipment. Climb with skis on skins then descent on bare skis.
