Danish world beaters

Scandinavia's smallest country has had a fantastic year in 2019 with numerous placements on the world's top lists. For example, in Denmark you can eat food prepared by the world's best chef, drink the best whisky on the continent or bite into some of Europe's best pizzas. Here’s a selection of Danish top placements.

Some of Europe’s best pizzas are served in Copenhagen

We can thank Italians for introducing pizza to world cuisine. But even though Copenhagen is a long way from both Naples and Rome, the pizzas here are in the European top 5.This is according to the Italian 50 Top Pizzas Guide, that ranks the pizzas at restaurant Bæst and Pizzeria Luca in third and fifth place respectively in Europe's Top 50 pizzas in 2019.

Europe's best whisky comes from Thy

Thy Whisky’s no. 9 Single Malt Bøg was recently crowned European Whisky of the Year by Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible. The Guide gives the whisky, which is made from organic grain and flavored with beech smoke at a micro distillery in Thy, a remarkable 96.5 points out of 100. The whisky was chosen from thousands of rivals from all round the continent - except for Irish and Scotch that have their own category in the Guide.

Geranium has a 3 Michelin-starts and is listed as one of the world's 5 best restaurants.

Try the world's best restaurant in Copenhagen

René Redzepi’s Noma has been named the world's best restaurant several times. Again in 2019, Danish restaurants rank high in the list of the World’s 50 Best Restaurants. Restaurant Noma, that reopened this year, returns to the list in second place, behind Mirazur of France. In fifth place is Rasmus Kofod’s Geranium, which is the only Danish restaurant with three Michelin stars.

When Scandinavian Traveler met Kenneth Toft-Hansen in the run up to the Bocuse D’Or, he was a man with a mission. That mission was achieved in January 2019, when the chef from Svinkløv Badehotel took gold in the Inferno in Lyon, and the title of world's best chef. The legendary Svinkløv Badehotel also reopened this year in spring, two and a half years after a devastating fire. So Toft-Hansen is now back in his own kitchen. If you want to taste his food, advance booking is essential.

Bornholm – Europe's second best holiday island

Readers of the world's biggest travel magazine Condé Nast Traveler, recently voted Bornholm the second best holiday island in Europe. The island's general appeal, beautiful nature and authentic atmosphere proved popular with the readers, while Bornholm also has a wonderful gastro scene and more hours of sunshine than most of the rest of Denmark.

World's most bike friendly city

It's no secret that the people of Copenhagen are keen cyclists. People pedal an amazing 1.44 million km in the Danish capital every day, and this figure is continuously rising. Copenhagen has once again been crowned the World's most bike friendly city by Copenhagenize, closely followed by Amsterdam. The number of cyclists on the roads, the new super cycle routes and bicycle bridges that have opened in the city all contributed to the top ranking.
